An HVAC Company Built on Skill, Teaching, and Expertise

When you compare HVAC companies in Modesto, ask who trained the technicians. With us, the answer is our owner, who has taught the trade.

Dycus Heating and Air Conditioning has been family-owned in Modesto since 2001. Homeowners call us for air conditioning, heating, heat pumps and ductwork. Businesses call too, for anything from one rooftop unit to a new building.

Our HVAC Services in the Central Valley

Air Conditioning Services

NOAA puts Modesto's July normal high at 95°F, so an air conditioner here works hard for months. That load wears out small parts first, like the capacitor that gives the motor its starting kick.

For larger homes, there's also residential VRF. It gives each room its own thermostat, all running off one outdoor unit. Our air conditioning services cover it alongside central systems and ductless mini-splits.

Heating Services

Winter here is short. Still, Modesto averages about 12 nights a year at or below freezing, per NOAA. Those are the nights a furnace has to light on the first try. We repair, replace, and maintain furnaces that run on natural gas, electricity, or propane.

A heat pump is the other main choice. One system cools all summer and heats through mild winters. Pair it with a gas furnace for a dual-fuel setup that switches to gas on the coldest nights. Our heating services also cover boilers and baseboard heaters.

Indoor Air Quality Services

Valley air carries harvest dust, spring pollen and, in some summers, wildfire smoke. Our indoor air quality services are products we add during an install or a tune-up. Better filters catch more of that dust and pollen, and humidifiers, dehumidifiers and UV lights can go in on the same visit.

Sometimes, though, the ducts are the trouble, not the air. When one bedroom runs warm, we check the duct design before suggesting a bigger unit.

Commercial HVAC Services

Our owner estimates that about half of our maintenance agreements are with businesses. So our HVAC technicians keep rooftop units, walk-in coolers and VRF running in offices, schools, restaurants and data centers. A rooftop unit is the metal cabinet on a flat roof that heats and cools the rooms below.

If you own a shop as well as a house, one phone number covers both. Our commercial HVAC services run from a single repair to a full new construction project.

The Team and Mission Behind Our Work

David Dycus, owner of Dycus Heating and Air Conditioning in Modesto, CA

A Mission in David's Own Words

David Dycus was still a teenager when he took his first trade job. When asked why he opened this company, he kept it short. "I wanted to have the freedom to do good jobs." That's still the standard on every visit.

Who Trains and Leads Our Technicians

David spent years teaching the trade from a course he wrote himself. Keith Mitchell, our installation manager, learned the work from him directly, and Steve O'Connell, our service manager, brings instructor experience of his own. Our NATE-certified technicians answer to both.

What That Means for Your Home

Every repair comes with a plain explanation. You'll hear what failed, why it failed, and how we'll fix it.

Why Families Recommend Us to Friends

A $99 Weekday Diagnostic, Then a Flat Rate

On weekdays, $99 pays for an honest diagnosis, not a sales visit, and evening or weekend visits run $150. Then you get the repair price from our flat-rate book before anyone picks up a tool. That price holds even if the job runs long.

NATE-Certified Technicians, Tested by Exam

NATE, short for North American Technician Excellence, certifies HVAC technicians who pass its exams. Ours have proven what they know on paper before they ever open your system.

Our Installers Sign Their Work

Inside the plenum, the metal box above the furnace, each installer writes their own name. "I want somebody to come back 20 years from now and know who did that job," our owner says.

Check Our Better Business Bureau Profile

We're members of the Better Business Bureau, and our profile there is open to anyone. Read our record before you book, and judge us on what you find.

Del Rio Neighbors Send Neighbors Our Way

Del Rio is a gated neighborhood in north Modesto, and by our owner's own count, about two in three homes there are our customers. Most first heard our name from a neighbor.

Daikin VRV Certified for Larger Homes

VRV is Daikin's brand of VRF, and Daikin has certified our installers to design and set it up, in large homes and office buildings alike.

Call Us Early for a Same-Day Visit

Can a Technician Come Out Today?

On weekdays, often yes. The phones open at 7 AM. Same-day slots go to the calls that come in early. Tell us what you're hearing, smelling or feeling at the vents. The office then gives you a time window for your visit. We answer until 5:30 PM.

What Happens on Weekends?

Our answering service takes weekend calls until 9 PM. From there, the technician on duty phones you back and plans the visit with you. Anything that comes in after 9 PM gets a call back the next morning. You won't be left wondering.

Heat Wave Days Book Up Fast

On the first 100-degree days of summer, calls pour in all at once. If today is already full, the office books the next free slot and tells you the time plainly. Until the technician arrives, pull the shades on west-facing windows.

Two Tune-Ups a Year for $189

A Modesto system cools for months, then switches to heat a few weeks later. Both changes are hard on worn parts. That's why our Energy Savings Agreement sends a technician each spring for cooling and each fall for heating.

Each system after the first adds $169 a year. You pay at the first visit. The second visit comes with the plan, and members take 15% off any repair. You'll find the plan with our other current offers.

Questions Homeowners Ask Before Booking

Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?

Start with the age and the repair price. One rule of thumb multiplies the two, and a result over $5,000 points toward replacing. Also, a system past 15 years, or one needing repairs every summer, is a candidate. We can price both options.

Do you service my brand of furnace or air conditioner?

Most likely. Our technicians work on Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Lennox, Daikin, Mitsubishi, Bosch, Goodman, York, Amana, Bryant, Ruud and American Standard. Read us the model number from the label on your unit when you call. Then the technician can bring the right parts.

Can I finance a new heating or cooling system?

Yes. Wells Fargo and Synchrony finance new systems, subject to credit approval. Don't count on a tax break, though. The federal credit for heat pumps and central air has ended. It ran out on December 31, 2025, per the IRS energy credit page. Ask us about the current rebate on 3-ton systems instead.

What should I do if my air conditioner stops at night?

Switch the thermostat off and check the copper lines at the indoor unit. If they're coated in ice, leave the system off for a few hours so the coil can thaw. Change a dirty filter and run ceiling fans to stay cool. Then call us in the morning.

How do I check an HVAC contractor's license in California?

Use the state's online license check. Type in a business name or license number. You'll see the license type, whether it's active and any complaints on file. Heating and cooling work falls under the C-20 class. We're licensed and insured, so look up Dycus Heating and Air Conditioning too.
